Litecoin Core 0.21.2.2 Update: A Closer Look at the New Security Enhancements and Market Response

by Lucas Rees

An Overview of the Litecoin Update

Litecoin recently announced the release of its Litecoin Core 0.21.2.2 update, a new minor version that includes essential security enhancements. The update is recommended for all users as it impacts prior versions. The primary focus of this update is security: it includes code that bolsters the nodes and improves network security, making it crucial for every wallet user and node operator.

With this update, memory usage is securely managed and limited during periods of high network traffic. This is particularly beneficial when the network is connected to slower peers, ensuring that nodes at the lower-end hardware level do not run out of memory when network activity intensifies.

Notable RPC API Changes

The update also brings significant changes to the RPC API. It includes an additional “addconnection” option for functional tests and the “getpeerinfo”, which now features two new fields for every peer, thereby expanding its possibilities. The newly introduced “addr_processed” and “addr_rate_limited” help keep track of address messages during processing.

How to Upgrade to the Latest Version

To take advantage of the new release, users are advised to download the binaries from the designated pages and folders. Using GPG is suggested to verify the authenticity and integrity of released binaries. This ensures that the downloaded binaries are authentic and free from tampering. Users operating on Linux, Win32 Cygwin, and MacOS are also provided with command-line GPG instructions for verifying the binaries’ integrity and authenticity using Gitian.

However, users are made aware that despite rigorous testing, the new version could potentially have bugs. Therefore, users are advised to back up their wallet.dat files before upgrading.

Litecoin’s Previous Version Performance Throwback

Litecoin Core v0.21.21, released in June 2022, resolved issues with MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) key generation for older wallets that were upgraded. The keys generated came from appropriate key pools, and any coins accidentally sent to previously generated stealth addresses were recoverable.

Current Marketplace Outlook

As of the time of writing, LTC was trading at $90.68, marking an increase of 1.04%. Its value against Bitcoin rose by 1.02% to 0.004056 BTC. Its market capitalization increased to $6.5 billion, and its trading volume also rose to $388 million, representing a 6.48% increase in the past 24 hours. LTC was ranked 13th overall, with a 0.64% market dominance.

Despite this, the update release was accompanied by a considerable surge in volume, legitimizing the downward price trend. Litecoin’s DyDx funding rate took a sharp dip on March 3, and negative sentiments spiked, mirroring declining investor confidence.
